For those of you that haven't seen it yet, you can go into your WoW directory under Data > EnUs > Interface > Cinematics and click on FotLK_1024. Metzen promised us an "epic" cinematic to bring a close to Arthas's story, and I felt like this was anything but.
Maybe I've been spoiled by Blizzard, but after Wrathgate I was just expecting something so much cooler. Hell, even the sort of half-assed Arthas vs Illidan cinematic at the end of Frozen Throne was more exciting than this.
Arthas dies while the ghost of his father looks on. Wooo...hooo...
Emo Tirion agrees to take on the burden of becoming the Lich King. He seems to be entirely by himself, despite the fact that (I'm assuming) Jaina, Sylvannas, and your entire raid should have been standing there moments earlier. Riveting.
Fuckin' Bolvar- a character who nobody cares about and had literally no lore attached to him before WotLK beyond "I stand in Stormwind and look like a badass until the king comes back"- randomly appears and demands to take on the burden of becoming the Lich King. Sorry- did I fall asleep?
Tirion agrees, and Bolvar puts on the helmet. For some reason, he is not taken over by the overwhelming, insane, evil spirit of Ner'Zhul like Arthas was. I guess maybe whatever bullshit Alexsrasza supposedly did to him at the Wrathgate is the equivalent of a tin-foil helmet?
And of course, there is the matter of the "There must always be a Lich King" shit. Seriously? If your explanation is that the Scourge will go insane if they don't have a leader and destroy the world.... then fuck, why didn't Arthas just take the helmet off a long time ago? All his aspirations would have been fulfilled! Because apparently we can hold off dedicated, strategic attacks using the might of the Scourge, but if they turn into a brainless mob then it's hopeless! All we can do is cower in our homes and wait for them to... I guess shamble along the bottom of the ocean, because it's not like raging zombies can operate boats or Necropoli or teleporters.
As someone who bought WoW in 2004 because I wanted to see the continuation of the story from Warcraft 3, this patch fails. The Icecrown dungeon itself is awesome, but that just makes the way they ended it that much more disappointing. Oh well... I guess maybe at this point I care more about this shit than the game writers do. I'm gonna go wipe p my tears with my life-sized Tyrande Whisperwind plushie. _________________ Tsumari? Who? I liked it. ICC and patch 3.3 gives closure to the whole scourge thing, and it was great. It's not Darth Vader great, but it's in the same ballpark.
The big failure in my mind of the whole expansion was 3.2 and ToC. The tournament grounds and dailies were awesome, a great gold maker and a fun rep grind, once you figured it out. The idea, though, that we'll take our best and brightest and run them through a meet grinder and see who is "worthy" smacked of the old school elitism that was rife through vanilla WoW.
It was fine.. I really don't know what else I'd expect. Granted I'm not a lore whore or RPer by any stretch, but I didn't think it was bad. Most of it made sesne.. A mindless mass of undead is a definite danger, Arthas obviously had a plan to conquer, where the Scourge unchecked would just destroy. My lore-fu isn't great but the impression I got from Arthas is that he didn't want the world destroyed, so that's why he wouldn't just let them have free reign..
Really I don't think that any end of Arthas would have satisfied a lot of people and certainly wouldn't have satisfied everyone. Blizz had a story to tell, and they told it well, so no sense in complaining about it.
I guess we can feel kind of cheated in the whole "epic ending" thing that was promised.. I wouldn't call that epic.. Not nearly enough explosions to be called epic (that's why you liked Wrathgate and you know it!!). _________________ "But there's no sense crying over every mistake.

I tend to agree, the whole there must always be a lich king thing seem more like they don't want to give up the concept of the character because we know Bolvar is going to go crazy at some point and become a raid boss. Its also kinda funny a guy who Onyxia mind controlled for the better part of two years now has the metal to first withstand months of Arthas torture, then to overpower spirits of the helm that make up the Lich King. Meh!
If nothing else its better than the story to Highlander 2. _________________ "You’re one in a million

I'm sorry, there were no movies made after Highlander...nor did Christopher Lambert star in any movie other than Highlander...on a similar note, there was only one season of Airwolf....maybe two.

Just a hearty FUCK YOU because I tried to watch the fucking .avi and I can't. I've now spent the last hour trying to figure out why I can't see the god damned video but can hear audio.

Ever heard of VLC media player? It's open source and works on the revolutionary idea: "What if we just made a video player that doesn't have to download every fucking codec individually as needed, but just comes with all of them?" That's how I was able to open it. If you're going to give someone your ire, you should be saying "Fuck Windows Media, Quicktime, DivX, Winamp, and RealPlayer." _________________ Tsumari? Who?
